Testing
DNA Guidelines
Alpha Casein, G6-Sulfatase Deficiency, Scrapie, Parent Verification, and Genetic Markers are ALL DNA tests! Once you order the tests, you will receive an email with your paperwork and instructions on how to send your samples to the lab. You will receive 2 pages: The first page is for YOUR RECORDS. The second page is to be sent to UC Davis/VGL with your samples.
A FEW IMPORTANT NOTES:
1. Please make sure the Email, Phone Number and Contact Time are accurate.
2. You can now order Casein, G6S, or Scrapie at the same time as Genetic Markers and Parent Verification.
3. New Guidelines for Parent Verification:
More than one goat may qualify as a potential sire without consideration of the dam , therefore testing all potential sires may be necessary.
The same thing applies to a dam verification.
Potential Sires that are related (uncles, siblings, father/son, etc) and/or line bred will require all potential sires to be tested and also may need the DNA from the dam to determine offspring. The testing process looks at the genetic markers to determine if the sire qualifies or is excluded. In cases where two males both appear to qualify as a sire, the dam's genetic information helps resolve the issue because knowing the genetic information of the dam allows us to determine which genetic markers could have come from which sire. This is because both the sire and the dam give half of their genetic information to their offspring, so having all potential parents helps VGL to resolve more complex parentage situations.
~For more information in helping to determine parents please see our frequently asked questions page or you may contact the Davis Testing Team at
davistesting@minidairygoats.org. We would like to help you through the process, giving options in the most efficient and economical way.
It is advantageous to have a goat's Genetic Markers on file because it can be used for future verifications without additional charge.
Only test animals you are going to register. For example, you do not need to test bucklings that are going to be wethered.

Genetic Markers
Reminder: This test is to keep your goat's genetic markers on file for FUTURE use. If you are completing Parent Verifications NOW, you DO NOT need to submit the possible parents for genetic markers SEPARATELY. All of their information is completed in the Parent Verification Form.
If you need more Genetic Markers Tests completed, you will need to begin another form after you SUBMIT this one.
